VOCABULARY:
- Color theory: a body of practical guidance to color mixing and the visual effects of a specific color combination.
- Primary colors: a group of colors from which all other colors can be obtained by mixing.
- Secondary colors: a color resulting from the mixing of two primary colors.
- Tertiary colors: a color produced by mixing two secondary colors.
- Color scheme: an arrangement or combination of colors.
- Gray scale: a range of gray shades from white to black.
- Neutral: includes black, white, gray, and sometimes brown and beige. You are sometimes called “earth tones.”
- Tints: the mixture of a color with white, which increases lightness
- Shades: the mixture of a color with black, which reduces lightness.

DAY 1: Introduction to color theory
- Color Theory Part I PowerPoint
- This is the start of a unit on painting.
- First you will learn about the basics of color.
- How our eyes see color: participate in the colorblind tests.
- The color wheel: you will try your hand at color mixing by painting your own color wheel.
- Color wheel worksheets.
- All the instructions you need are on the worksheet. Any questions about the directions?
- You will only get the colors red, blue, and yellow
- Use only a small amount of paint to start; you can always get more from the teacher.
- The proper way to wash out a brush: (cleanup standard)
- Carefully rub the side of the brush in your palm with water.
- Rinse until the water coming off the brush runs clear.
- Put the brush back on the water cup – laying across the top
- Place your wet worksheets on a drying rack to dry.

- If you still need to finish your color wheel - work on that first. If you finished your color wheel - add it to the “exercises” portion of your art notebook.
